History and Origin
Ginger is a perennial rhizome plant of approximately 1.5 m in height growing in tropical forests. It needs sun and humidity. Its name comes from the Sanskrit “singabera”, meaning “cone shaped”. Probably native to India, ginger is commonly used in Asiatic cuisine. It is notably consumed marinated (gari) to refresh the taste during sushi meals and ease digestion. In Occident, it enters in the preparation of the popular gingerbread.
Ginger has been used since immemorial times for its therapeutic properties. As an example, Chinese women would use it to treat morning sickness during pregnancy. And recent double blind studies have proven that precise property. Ginger also presents recognized anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
