Tsuga canadensis Hemlock, Hemlock Spruce, Eastern Hemlock Pinaceae
History and Origin Of the four hemlock species found in North America, only Eastern hemlock is indigenous in eastern Canada. In Quebec, among all conifers, it is the less cold resistant. It tolerates well shade and prefers humid and fresh environment. Native Americans use the leaves for pulmonary, urinary, and intestinal disorders, rheumatisms and neuralgia, and to treat polyps and warts. Infused, the internal bark is used to treat colds, fever, cough, and diarrhea. The decoction is applied externally for skin problems.
